How to Write a Current Events Summary
Publication Date:
When you are assigned to compose a current events paper, it means that your task is to write a summary describing the event that has recently happened. The special feature of such papers is that relevant information is not yet published in books. Therefore, you should look for data in magazines, newspapers, and the Internet.
Below, we suggest easy steps to come up with a paper about current events that will be helpful if you do not want to turn to the research paper service.
Choose a news article
You should select a reputable news source that provides carefully researched and accurately written news. Do not refer to blogs or personal websites as they usually present personal opinions rather than factual news.
Select a recent article. Your task is to write about a current event; therefore, you have to choose the material that is one or two days old, maximum, one week old.
The topic must be appropriate. Your teacher has probably assigned you a general question, like sports, world events, politics, etc. However, since these topics are too wide, you should narrow the assigned one to a specific issue, event, or aspect.
Prepare to write the summary
Devote enough time to reading the whole article carefully. You have to gain a full understanding of it. Once you have done it, try to recount it aloud. It does not matter if you will tell yourself or somebody else. The critical point is that recounting the material will help you better understand its major point. Once you have realized that you are able to retell the article, read it one more time to catch some crucial points that might have been missed earlier.
Write down a list of the five Ws (What, Who, Why, When, and Where) and H (How). These should match the details of the chosen article. This list will help you in creating connections between the key point of the article and its elements that make up the story. It is vital to provide specific details for every point of this list.
Compose a sentence that reflects the impact or significance of the story. Write why this information is significant, and why you are describing it. Include your point of view about the material.
Write the summary
As you begin crafting your essay, you have to be sure that you are composing an original paper with no plagiarism. Therefore, you should put the news article aside and, instead, use the list you have created at the previous step to write the summary. You can also buy research paper, and get a unique piece of writing, but if you want to come up with your own essay, consider following our advice.
Start with the topic sentence that must reflect the article’s key point and explain the reader what your essay is about. Further, this paragraph has to sum up the events presented in the news article. Come up with an outline of the article, concentrating on the five Ws and H. You should tell the story in a logical manner. You can rearrange the order of your five Ws and H if you feel like it is necessary. The last sentence of this section has to restate the article’s main idea. You can simply reword the topic sentence.
Write the reflection
Write down your thoughts about the article. In this paragraph, try to make connections between the initial article and the community in general. Highlight the significance of this information. Think about how it can be connected to your community, or your state, or the country. Consider also connecting it to your class. Probably, you have talked about some issues that are somehow related to this article.
The first sentence of this section has to explain the reader what you will be discussing further. Then, support your standpoint with specific examples from the news article. Conclude with a summary, or with a statement about the final impact of this story.
Finalize the essay
The proofreading/editing step is not less significant than the writing one. Now, you have to ensure that no spelling or grammar mistakes are going to distract your reader from the content of your essay. Look for any typos, confusing phrases, errors, etc. and correct them. Ask someone to read your essay and comment on it.
Provide a citation for the article, if it is required by the assignment. Your teacher may also ask you to include the initial article with your summary. In this case, staple or paperclip the original article to your essay. If you got the material from the Internet, make sure to print the entire article.
